President Isaias Calls for New Approach to UN Role in Horn of Africa

President Isaias Afwerki held talks with Mr. Guang Cong, the newly appointed United Nations Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, at Denden Guest House on Wednesday afternoon. The discussions centered on regional developments and the UN’s role in conflict resolution across the Horn.
President Isaias said the UN’s past interventions had fallen short of achieving sustainable peace, stressing that “deploying peacekeeping forces without accountability and holistic frameworks cannot yield lasting results.” He noted that the issue lies not solely with the UN, but within “a flawed international order” that undermines genuine conflict resolution.
He also highlighted the weakening of regional organizations, saying their founding principles have been compromised by external interference. “Most have become vehicles for external agendas,” the President observed.
On Sudan, President Isaias reaffirmed Eritrea’s historical solidarity and recalled the concept paper Asmara submitted in 2022 proposing a citizenship-based popular governance structure. He lamented that the effort stalled due to foreign meddling that deepened the crisis.
Mr. Guang Cong, who assumed office as UN Special Envoy in July 2025, praised Eritrea’s contributions to regional peace and expressed readiness to cooperate closely with Asmara. The meeting was also attended by Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and UN Resident Coordinator Nahla Valji.
