Asmara Carnival Draws more than 13,000 for Independence Week

Asmara’s Martyrs and Liberation Avenues turned into the center of Eritrea’s Independence Week celebrations on Tuesday, with more than 13,000 participants taking part in a street carnival across the capital.
Eritrea’s Ministry of Information said the carnival brought together participants from all administrative sub-zones in Asmara, with cultural dances and public performances forming part of the afternoon program.
The event is part of the wider national celebrations leading up to Eritrea’s 35th Independence Day on May 24. The Ministry said a photo exhibition organized by Eritrea’s Defense Forces was held on Monday, while documentary films organized by the National Union of Eritrean Women were featured on Tuesday morning.
The street carnival drew large crowds along the capital’s main avenues, where national flags, traditional dress, music and public performances marked one of the most visible events of Independence Week.
Independence Day remains Eritrea’s central national holiday, commemorating May 24, 1991, when Eritrean forces entered Asmara after a 30-year liberation struggle.
This year’s celebrations are taking place under the theme “Our Resilience: Our Guarantee,” placing national unity, memory and continuity at the center of the anniversary program.
