Ethiopia’s Betrayal: Abiy Ahmed’s Forces Attack Somalia Despite Peace Accord

In a shocking act of betrayal, Ethiopian forces launched an unprovoked assault on Somali National Army (SNA) positions in Doolow, Gedo region, killing Somali personnel and injuring civilians, earlier today. The Federal Government of Somalia condemned the aggression as a blatant violation of the Ankara Accord, AU principles, and UN norms.

The assault, occurring at 10:00 AM local time, targeted three key Somali bases manned by the SNA, the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), and the Somali Police Force. This deliberate and premeditated act of hostility comes as Somalia remains deeply engaged in peacebuilding efforts, guided by the Ankara Declaration.

Violation of Agreements and Norms

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government has been a signatory to the Ankara Accord, a landmark peace agreement aimed at fostering regional cooperation, mutual respect, and stability. Today’s aggression not only undermines the principles of the Accord but also blatantly contravenes the African Union’s Constitutive Act and the Charter of the United Nations.

Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the Ethiopian incursion as a “blatant violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.” The Ministry also highlighted the timing of the attack, as a high-level Somali delegation was in Addis Ababa for peace talks. This, they argue, underscores the duplicitous and backstabbing nature of Ethiopia’s current leadership.

A History of Warmongering

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, once hailed as a reformer and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has faced mounting criticism for his increasingly authoritarian policies and aggressive regional posture. This latest attack adds to a series of actions that have eroded trust between Ethiopia and its neighbors.

Abiy’s administration has been accused of meddling in Somali internal affairs, destabilizing border regions, and pursuing expansionist policies at the expense of regional harmony.

Regional and International Repercussions

The Federal Government of Somalia has vowed to respond decisively to Ethiopia’s unprovoked aggression, warning that such provocations will not go unanswered. Somalia has called for urgent consultations with the African Union, the United Nations, and other key stakeholders to address this blatant violation of its sovereignty.

“This attack threatens not just Somalia but the peace and coexistence of the entire region,” stated Somalia’s Foreign Ministry.

As tensions rise, the Horn of Africa faces a stark reminder of the fragility of peace and the need for collective action to uphold international agreements.
