Sudan and Saudi Arabia establish coordination council

Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieldin Salem and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan

Sudan and Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministers signed an agreement in Riyadh establishing a coordination council to organize wider political, economic and security cooperation.

Sudan and Saudi Arabia established a bilateral coordination council in Riyadh on Monday, signing an agreement aimed at expanding political, economic, security and investment cooperation.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieldin Salem Ahmed Ibrahim signed the document at the Saudi Foreign Ministry, according to Al-Mohagig, citing the ministry. The council is intended to provide an institutional framework for joint initiatives, projects and defined targets. The ministers also chaired a meeting of their countries’ political consultation and follow-up committee.

Sudan’s foreign minister said the framework would include security and defence, economic cooperation and technology, while calling for safe navigation in the Red Sea. Sudan reconstituted its side of the coordination mechanism in January following a 2025 understanding between Sovereignty Council chair Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Officials have not yet released the council’s membership, timetable or first projects.
