Girmay lights up the Montréal breakaway as all three Eritreans abandon

Eritrea's elite men's road race at the 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montréal finished without a survivor: Biniam Girmay, Henok Mulubrhan and Merhawi Kudus all recorded DNF in the 273.4km race from Brossard to Avenue du Parc on 27 September.

Girmay was the biggest name in the 16-rider move that went clear soon after the flag, and he stayed with the strongest men when the group tore itself apart on the Montréal circuit. The break led by 2:41 with 253km to go before France's Bruno Armirail drove the chase that swallowed it with 106km remaining. Van Aert, Van der Poel, Onley, Roglič and Simmons then lit up the finale.

Brandon McNulty (United States) attacked late to win solo in 6:17:04, becoming the first American elite men's road race world champion since Lance Armstrong in 1993. Michael Matthews (Australia) took second and Mathieu van der Poel (Netherlands) third. Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier, named in Eritrea's startlist entry, does not appear in the official classification.
