Eritrea take opening AFCON point in 1–1 Kenya draw

Eritrea opened their AFCON 2027 Group D campaign with a 1–1 draw against Kenya at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on Saturday.

Nahom Netabay put the Red Sea Camels ahead in the 36th minute, giving Eritrea a 1–0 lead at half-time. Kenya equalised in the 87th minute to deny Eritrea victory, but Hasham Yakan’s side leave Nairobi with a point from their first group match.

Eritrea will next face South Africa on Wednesday, 30 September at Al Salam Stadium in Cairo. With Kenya already qualified as a tournament co-host, Eritrea are competing with South Africa and Guinea for Group D’s remaining place at the finals.
